May First Celebrated Czech Style

May 01, 2018 in Czech

May 1st is a special day for us Czechs, even for us Czechs living abroad. The first day of May is traditionally connected to love.

In the 19th century one of our most celebrated poets, Karel Hynek Macha, wrote a poem that starts with these beautiful words: Late evening on the first of May; the twilight day- the time of love. Since then we are celebrating May 1st with kisses under a blossom tree. In Prague, you can see people leaving flowers at the statue of Karel Hynek Macha.

I am going to be kissed under the blossomed tree because I really, really don't want to dry up as our folk saying says: "On May first a girl has to be kissed under the blossomed tree otherwise she will dry up."
